Why is my senior cat with kidney disease walking sideways and falling?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 19 years and 4 months old

Cat, 19, diagnosed with stage 2 kidney failure march 2016 along with hypertension. Is gernally fine, doesn't seem to be in pain or discomfort. Eating normally. Severe change in walk this morning. Seems to be walking sort of sideways. Back legs seem shakey. Walks a bit and then falls down. Went to litter box an peed outside of box while standing in it. Stumbled out and walked sideways. Resting as normal now, seems normal. Concerned and worried.

I'm sorry to hear that this is going on with Virtue. My biggest concern would be that he has a developed a blood clot that has disturbed the blood flow to the back legs. This is unfortunately one of the common side effects of kidney disease and hypertension. I would recommend taking Virtue in to see your vet for a recheck as soon as possible. They will need to check his kidney values and see if they have worsened, check a blood pressure and may recommend starting Virtue on additional medication, such as aspirin, to help with the clots. There is a chance that this abnormal walking could be due to arthritis and aging. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
