Puppy lethargic, red eyes, yellow gunk. When should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 8 months and 1 day old | 17 lbs

My puppy is a bit lethargic with red eyes and yellow gunk from both eyes. He did eat breakfast though and has normal elimination. What is likely cause and treatment? Can a visit to the vet wait until tomorrow?

If he is squinting or his eyes seem painful you should see a veterinarian today to make sure he doesn't have scratches on his eyes (corneal abrasions). If the white part of his eyes are red with a small amount of discharge he could have allergic or infectious conjunctivitis, which could probably wait until tomorrow for treatment. I would not recommend using any eye washes or drops until you can see a vet.

Her eye doesn't look too bad, but I would call your vet and let them know what is going on. They will probably recommend that you bring her in for an exam. The worry about eye infections, even mild ones, is that, left untreated, the eye will get itchy and your puppy will rub her face more and more, with the potential to actually injure the cornea with rubbing. It's best to get a jump on things like this as soon as possible, to ensure the condition is treated before it gets too bad and progresses.
