My old cat has matted fur. Vet or groomer for gentle care?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 18 years and 8 months old | 6 lbs

Hi - I have an 18-year-old tuxedo cat named Misty who is starting to get matted hair around the area of the tail on her back. I want your opinion on whether to take her to my vet for this or find a groomer. Misty is old and frail and I do not want anything to upset her.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! i would see if your Vet can do it first. They will be more gentle, it may not look the best, but they will be conscious over her age and fragility. If she can not tolerate it then they can discuss maybe using light sedation. I hope this helps!
