My dog is licking his paw. Is it an insect bite? What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Male | neutered | 1 year and 5 months old | 25 lbs

I think my dog may have been bitten by an ant or fleas in the the webbing of his paw. He's licking it kind of biting at it. I gave him a calming chew just to make him tired and not as interested. Other than swelling, which there is none currently, what else should we look for? He's not favoring it when he walks but sometimes picks it up when standing. Is there topical anti-itch to get from a pet store that would help? Not super concerned but I want to be aware and give him the best care.

Try to prevent him from licking as this may cause infection. Often dogs lick at their toes due to allergies so if it continues I would recommend a vet visit to assess for allergies or atopy. Short term monitor for swelling and prevent licking. Most topical products usually make them want to lick more so I wouldn't recommend anything topically. If it seems to bother him you can do a short soak in Epsom salt bath on the affected foot. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
