Cat constipated: No poop after enema and stool softener. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Siamese | Female | spayed | 8 years and 6 months old | 13 lbs

I took my (female Siamese) cat to the vet yesterday, and they determined that she had a fever, lower back issues, and x-rays determined that she was very constipated. I scolded her for pooping on the carpet a few days ago. Is it possible that she thinks that she's not allowed to poop at all? The vet gave her an enema, an anti-inflammatory/pain meds for her back, and a syrupy stool softener medication, but she still hasn't gone. It's been about 24 hours since my visit. How should I proceed?

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If Yakka received an enema yesterday she may have been completely emptied out and not have enough stool to have a bowel movement yet. If she is eating and acting normally I would want to see a bowl movement by tomorrow. The goal of the liquid stool softener is softer than normal but not diarrhea. I would want you to call your Vet Tuesday if she still hasn't had a bowel movement. I hope this helps! I wish you and Yakka the best!
