Why is my puppy repeatedly sick with lethargy and no appetite?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 7 months and 7 days old | 25 lbs

We have a 8 m/o mutt who has been getting sick consistantly every 2wks for 1-3 days. He gets lethargic, loses his appetite, doesn't want to move/play, depressed. Sometimes he whines when we pick him up during theses times, but not always. Historically he has recovered eventually, seemingly on his own. A month ago we took him to the ER vet for it and everything came back normal, other than some (assumed) gas in xray. Seemed to get worse after neuter/vaccines? Any ideas?

Intermittent loss of appetite and lethargy could be a sign of a few different diseases including tick borne disease, inflammatory bowel disease, parasites or atypical Addison's disease. If this is continuing to happen I would recommend asking about referral to a specialist for some more in depth testing, or it is possible that your veterinarian can recommend some more tests to run first.
