Why is my cat suddenly pooping on the floor outside the litter box?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 3 years and 2 months old | 11 lbs

When I woke up this morning, I found cat poop on the living room floor. It was firm. 3 pieces in 3 different places. It's the first time this has happened. Have used the same cat litter (pretty litter) for the last month. She also doesn't always cover her poop in the box. I've tried several different types of litter. She is in the litter box peeing as i write this. Confused.

Cats can be such a mystery! I'm sorry you are dealing with this with Sansa. The first thing I will tell you is that it is not "natural" for cats in the wild to urinate and defecate in the same place. So, it may not have anything to do with the litter as much as it does with the litterbox. So, the first thing I would do is add another litterbox. Veterinary behaviorists say that the "correct" number of litterboxes is the number of cats + 1. Cats also generally do not like litter boxes that are covered or have liners. Both of those factors may play a role when cats are not using the box normally. So, I would start with adding another litterbox and see if that solves the problem. Be sure to clean the boxes regularly (at least once daily) because cats have a very strong sense of smell. I hope that helps! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
