Cat has hookworms. Do I need a recheck & how long to isolate?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 1 year and 1 month old | 10.02 lbs

Our 1 yr old adopted cat was diagnosed by our vet with hookworms. He gave me 3 treatments (Panacur suspension?) to use for three consecutive days to treat for the worms. He made no mention of re-checks/2nd treatment? Also, how long should we keep him in the crate (our lab's crate) before he may be safely out in the house???

Depending on the doctor and worm burden. rechecks (for this individual diagnosis) aren't always needed because the three days of panacur tends to be successful. If however, loose stool/diarrhea persist, it would then be recommended to have an additional fecal exam performed to determine if there is still an intestinal parasite present. Once the treatment is complete, it should be safe to let the cat out of the crate but make sure to clean the litter pan well, specially if there are other cats in the home.
