What food should I give my puppy with liver shunt and high bile acids?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bichon Frise | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 2 days old | 2 lbs

My dog is 3 months old, and he is bishon frise. When we took his first blood results, bile acids were 222 (0-10 normal). From then our dog is on liver shunt diet (hepatic food, lactulose, legaphyton). His behaviour is better from then. We took a blood results again 4 days ago, and they are 177 (0-10 normal). Urea is 0.5 (3.1-9.20 normal), creatinine 32 (44-124 normal). Erythrocytes 4.19 (5.5-8.5 normal). Hemoglobine 92 (141-200normal). Can you help us what to give him to eat?

Typically in dogs with liver shunts I would recommend a low protein diet. Typically a prescription diet called Hills L/D but purina and royal canine makes these food too. I would talk to your vet about which food might be best. Also consult a surgeon to see if liver shunt surgery is possible for Pako.. Hope that helps!
