My cat scoots after litter box. Is it urgent? What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 1 year and 1 month old

Pumpkin has been occasionally scooting his bottom along the carpet after using the litter box. It doesn't happen every time. His appetite and energy remains normal, also his stool is normal although he has had diarrhea maybe twice in the past month. Other than the scooting, he acts totally normal. He shares a large litter box with his littermate, who does not scoot at all. I will, of course, take him to the vet to be seen as soon as I'm able. I just want to make sure it's nothing urgent.

Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I do not think you have too much to be concerned about. Sometimes a piece of litter will stick to the hair around the rectum or penis, & rather than groom it off, a cat will scoot. However, with the report that Pumpkin has had a loose stool in the past month, I would not be surprised if he had some intestinal parasites, possibly roundworms, or tapeworms. No emergency to have him seen by your veterinarian, just take him in at your convenience. Take care.
