My 6-month-old dog suddenly peeing inside. Is it heat, UTI, or stress?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 6 months and 4 days old | 32 lbs

My boyfriend and I have a dog that we adopted in the middle of this past July. She just turned 6 months old on August 26, but she is fully potty trained. Not a single accident since we first got her and finished potty training (so over a month of no accidents). She suddenly started peeing a lot inside today, even right after being taken outside. This has never happened before. Is she going into heat? Does she have a UTI? Is it stress?

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Inappropriate urination is something that can occur with conditions such as a urinary tract infection (as you indicated), urinary tract stones, behavioral issues, among other possibilities. If she is doing it consistently, it is recommended to have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment which may include a urinalysis and urine culture to check for a urinary tract infection. Alternatively, she may be started on broad spectrum antibiotics right away to see if her clinical signs improve. Good luck!
