My cat's scab came off, now it's red and sore. What can I do at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered

I noticed a large scab approx 2 x 50p piece size on my cats back. The scab came away and now it looks red and sore and he keeps licking the area. Is there anything I can use at home in the meantime before I go to see the vet?

Hello from across the pond! I would try and keep it clean by washing the lesion with a mild soap and water. Nothing else to keep from irritating the wound further. From the pictures you posted, it does look like there is a bit of yellow discharge coming from the wound indicating an infection. You vet may prescribe antibiotics when you see him/her soon.

Hello there! If the area isn't bothering him, you can probably just keep an eye on it for now. But if it looks red, swollen, has discharge, or is painful to the touch, likely a good idea to have Pippin checked out by his vet!

This looks like scab, probably from an infection, you will need to wait a few days and see if it seems to be healing or if it is getting worse, in case this is not getting any better you will have to get it checked and treated by your vet.

That is a pretty large crusting lesion. Does he go outdoors? It could be an abscess from a fight. If he is indoors only then I would be more suspicious of a skin infection, an infected growth, or even the possibility of ring worm. I would encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian soon. In the meantime you can try to soak off the scab with a warm water compress and see what is underneath it. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
