My cat wheezes and coughs daily. Allergies or asthma from new home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 9 lbs

My cat has maybe once a day where she gets up from where she is calmly laying and starts wheezing/coughing. This has been going on for about a week with no vomit or discharge, and never happens during or following playtime. Weve lived in a new state for about three months and I'm wondering if It may be allergies or asthma caused by the new location.

I would be very concerned about asthma. It often happens when they have inhaled something that causes inflammation if the lungs. It could be related to something in your new area that she previously wasn't exposed to. I would also think about anything in the house that might irritate her lungs such as air fresheners, smoke or anything with a strong fragrance. I would recommend taking her to your veterinarian where they will most likely do a chest x-ray to look at her heart and lungs.
