Why is my cat always at the water bowl? Is it kidney disease?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 17 years and 7 months old | 9.5 lbs

Hi would a cat who may be in early early stages of kidney disease lay at the water bowl? My cat does do this and he is also on amlodipine&methimazole, but this water bowl behavior began a year ago when he was first diagnosed with hyperthyroidism& high blood pressure, long before I was told he may be in early stages of kidney disease,-we found this out just recently. Thank u!

If your cat is drinking excessive amounts of water then this can be a sign of kidney disease. We can often see early kidney disease with hyperthyroidism as well. I would recommend having some bloodwork done on your kitty if he hasn't had any in the last few months to check his kidney values. This is recommended every 6 months in a cat his age.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This behavior is likely due to his kidney condition as that typically will cause increased water intake. It is likely that this has been affecting your kitty for some time now, especially because of his age. You may discuss with your veterinarian ways to slow down chronic kidney disease such as the use of kidney diets or periodic fluid administration. Good luck and have a good day!
