My dog's eye is bloodshot and red. Should I be worried or see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Female | spayed | 5 years and 2 months old | 17 lbs

I just noticed my dogs eye is somewhat bloodshot. Is this a cause for concern? Should I take her to the vet? I'm worried. Thanks!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If the eye is nonpainful (no excessive tears, not blinking it a lot or keeping it closed or rubbing it) you can see how it looks in the morning. If she is doing any of the above get her to a Vet sooner than later. If the eye is still more red than the other eye tomorrow schedule an appointment. It could just be mild irritation or allergies or something more serious (a scratch on cornea, inflammation of the eye, glaucoma though I would except the eye to be painful). I hope this helps and I wish you the best!
