Is Prednisolone safe for my senior cat's joint pain? What are options?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered

Very worried about side effects of low dose steroid on my senior cat age c12-14 years old.Dose is 2.5mg per day of Prednisolone.Neutered male who as degenerative disease in elbows and foot.He is lame going up stairs and other than that I cannot see any limping of apparent pain when he s walking. He cannot tolerate Loxicom-vomits.My worry is that I am medicating a healthy senior cat when I do not need to.So far the side effects of steroids are increased appetite and thirst. V.worried.

I am very sorry to hear about your kitty! We do sometimes resort to steroids in cases where quality of life is suffering but try to avoid when possible. I would ask your vet about starting a glucosamine chondroutin joint supplement and starting Adequan injections. These can help many of these cases be more comfortable with no ill effects.
