Why is my 4-month-old kitten vomiting and sleepy after eating?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 4 months and 26 days old | 8 lbs

My 4 month old kitten was fine this morning and after I gave him his wet food around 3:00pm he began feeling sleepy and just now he vomited. What could be wrong with him?

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be related to some degree of gastroenteritis or upset stomach. This would be the best case scenario. I recommend that you continue to monitor Whiskers closely for now. Have water available at all times to try to avoid dehydration. If no improvement is seen in the next 24 hours or he develops more vomiting and becomes more lethargic, have Whiskers evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment based on findings. Good luck!

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Wala is such a handsome boy! I can see the Wala's stool is a little soft, but there does not appear to be any blood or mucus present. As for the vomit, in the photo, it looks more like undigested food, which is regurgitation. This may be due to the quick diet change, hair balls, or a more serious condition such as intestinal parasites or an obstruction. I recommend keeping a close eye on Wala, and offering him a small amount of food in about 8-12 hours (1/2 of his normal portion). If he can keep this down, he can return to eating his normal sized meals. If Wala continues vomiting, develops diarrhea, or is increasingly lethargic, he should be seen by a vet to rule out the conditions above. I hope this helps and that all is well!
