My cat has high liver enzymes. Is garlic oil in his meds safe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My 1-year-old cat has elevated ALT (155 iu/l) and AST (90 iu/l). Normal ranges are 29-145 and 12-42, respectively. He shows no signs of illness. My vet prescribed 2 medications for him, but I'm not sure if they're safe. The first one is called PENNel and has 25 mg of Biphenyl dimethyl dicrboxylate and 50 mg of garlic oil. Isn't garlic toxic to cats? The other one is Feroglobin (iron, zinc, lysine, minerals and vitamin B complex) with honey, malt & orange flavor. Are these safe for him?

I'm sorry to hear that your cat has some elevated liver enzymes. Those medications are not ones that we commonly use in the US, but your vet would not have prescibed them if they were not safe to use. Large amounts of garlic or onion can cause a problem in red blood cells in cats, but garlic oil is generally only a 0.05% solution, so it should not be a concern. Please let me know if that was helpful. I hope your kitty improves soon. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
