My dog's side lump is oozing orange and losing hair. What is it?

My dog has a lump on her side. Today after being washed off by a hose, it lost all the hair and is now oozing orange stuff. Do you know what this could be?

Thank you for providing a picture of Maggie's lump. This could be a cyst that has now opened up, or it could be an abscess. I would have her seen by a vet for this lump. The vet can diagnose what is causing it and can treat it. A cyst will need to be drained sterilely and may need to be removed surgically to prevent it from reoccurring. An abscess will require draining and flushing, as well as antibiotics to treat the infection. I hope this helps!

It's difficult to tell exactly what's going on here without seeing the lesion and being able to do some testing, but I am suspicious of a skin infections. These infections can be due to fungi, bacteria, parasites, or all of the above. There is often a primary problem that causes the itch, so if Maggie has been itching for a while, then it's best to get the source of the itch discovered by a vet. I'll give you a few tips for dealing with a skin infection, but if the lesion gets worse, or is not getting any better within a week of treatment, then I'd recommend you have a vet evaluate Maggie. I recommend doing the following every day until the skin appears normal again: 1) Clip the hair around the area and expose all of the lesions. 2) Wash the area with warm water and a medicated shampoo (can get this at the pet store) once a day. Use a cloth and gently wipe away the scabs. Do not scrub, because it will irritate the skin more. It's OK if all of the scabs do not come off

Hello. This could be a pretty simple cyst, but I would not recommend doing any more squeezing as this could result in an infection settling into the tissues. Clean the area with an antiseptic, preferably with something containing 2-4% chlorhexidine ( usually available at any pharmacy ) 2-3 times a day, & plan to have your vet take a look at the area at your earliest convenience. It is unlikely anything serious, but it is always best to examine any new lumps & bumps that show up, especially on an older dog. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. What i am seeing in the pictures is likely a sebaceous cyst that ruptured. These are common with older dogs and are benign. When these rupture there is a chance they will become infected so the best treatment is to have it removed to prevent this from happening. Any lumps/bumps that you notice on your dog should be checked out by your vet. Lumps in this location can be any of these things: * abscess (infection) * cyst * cancer (benign or malignant) * wart There is no way I can tell you with 100% certainty what it is just based on your description or by looking at a photo but my best guess is that it is probably a histiocytoma. Thank you for providing a picture of Luna's bump. Yes, malignant tumors can rupture, but so can cysts or abscesses. The only way to know for sure is to have tests done on it, such as fine needle aspirate. I would take Luna into another vet for a second opinion to get a definitive diagnosis as to what is causing the bump. Abscesses are treated with antibiotics, so they don't need to be removed surgically. If it is a tumor, it can be removed but it would be up to the vet treating her to decide if it's safe to do. I would have Luna seen by another vet for a second opinion on Monday. I hope this helps!

It seems to be a skin cyst of some sort. It's very difficult for me to know without seeing it. Based on your description, you are likely seeing sebaceous cysts, comedones or possibly a wart. Either way, the actual cyst is not a big problem, but it could indicate another issue. Some conditions can cause an increased incidence of these cysts, so it's best to have your vet check out Demon and see if there is any need for concern. Also, I do not recommend squeezing the cysts, because you can sometimes cause inflammation and in-turn infection to the area. I hope that helps and all is well with Demon.

Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco! From the pictures, it appears as though this is a cyst. I would clean this using a combined solution of water and betadine (mix until light brown) and keep the area clean. The cyst will likely close back up now that it has ruptured. If it continues to drain material or becomes infected, then I would have a veterinarian take a look at this and plan to have it removed. I hope this helps! This could be a cyst, an abscess, a benign tumor, or a malignant tumor. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed. Having Rosie seen by a vet for this a good idea. I hope this helps!
