My stray cat is limping. Should I wait for the vet or can it heal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

There is a neighborhood stray cat that I believe was injured. I don't know if he was hit by a car or just hurt his foot. I want to help him, but there are no vets near me that are open until Monday. He can walk, but it is with a with a heavy limp. He is eating and mostly laying down. He is not panting or anything. He seems normal except when you see him walk. Is there anything I can do? Can he heal without medical intervention? I'm sure he has FIV and I'm afraid the vet will put him down. Thanks

Stray cats are very hardy. He will probably heal in a week or month, depending on the injury, without treatment if he can rest and have food and water. If he stops eating then that is serious and I would take him for treatment as you don't want him to suffer. Often rescue groups can help with the medical bills and may be able to place him when he recovers. Thanks looking after him and using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you get answers to your veterinary questions.
