Why isn't my new 2-month-old adopted kitten eating much food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 2 months and 1 day old | 3 lbs

I adopted a two month old kitten last week. He is not eating very much - I am feeding him about a half cup of dry food he had been eating at the shelter a day and he is eating maybe half of that if I'm lucky. He seems very comfy in his new home and purrs constantly other than that. Is this something to be alarmed about?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Congrats on your new kitten! Combo is a great name! You can try supplementing some canned food or try a different dry food. I like Purina kitten chow. Make sure he has been dewormed and his vaccines are up to date. If he is growing and isn't too thin and isn't vomiting or having diarrhea he may be fine and just need time to adjust to his new home. I hope this helps and good luck!
