Dog won't eat dog food, vomits, but vet says he's just picky?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 2 months old | 7 lbs

My dog won't eat dog food. However he will eat most human food and his treats. Also, he throws up every couple of days. He's drinking water, has a ton of energy and is otherwise acting normal. He's pooping a lot and that looks normal. I did take him to the vet for this a couple of weeks ago. The vet said he's probably just being picky and otherwise was in good shape. He prescribed meds, which the dog has now finished. However his symptoms haven't changed. He's vomiting a translucent orange

If the vet did not do any testing you may need to take Pepe back for bloodwork or other diagnostics. People good can cause chronic inflammation, pancreatitis and malnutrition in dogs. Pancreatitis can be fatal. He needs to eat dog food only. If he is healthy he will eat dog food eventually if other foods are not offered. Discuss with your vet if he needs further diagnostics and stop giving anything to eat except for dog food as recommended by his vet. Good luck and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
