How to help a dog overcome fear of me and stop peeing when I'm near?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 30 lbs

I work at a doggy day care, walking and playing with the dogs all day. Recently we got a dog who is so scared of me, even to the extent he pees himself everytime I get to close. His owner told me that he has never acted this way before, he only shows this fear towards me. How can I train him to no longer fear me?. He's good with strangers, and he plays well with other dogs. How can I get him to be more comfortable around me? He won't even eat a treat if I'm in the same room.

I would start with what I call happy visits. Every day walk in the room in a calm manner and say hello from a distance. Praising the dog verbally. Each day walk closer and continue to praise him. Leave a treat for him on the ground and tell him you have done so. After a week you should be able to make it Remy and provide him a treat. Eventually he will become calmer and used to your presence through the positive reinforcement. If it is also possible for you to be the one who provides his meals it will foster your bond. Best of luck!
