Why is my dog suddenly lethargic and can't chew food? Is she in pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 5 years and 3 months old | 45 lbs

My dog is a 5 year old female terrior mix. Unsure of what the mix is. Since this morning she has been very slow and low energy; not her usual demeanor. She will not chew her food, she almost seems as if she can't. I believe something is wrong with her teeth or jaw. She also looks like she has been crying. She won't look at me or chew on any of her toys. She also can't seem to sleep, probably from pain. I didn't feed her anything different and this just started happening this morning. What is it?

I would recommend a vet visit for Maddie. She may have a foreign body lodged in her mouth or there are several disease processes that make it painful for dogs to open their mouth. Because she sounds pretty uncomfortable from your description I would consider getting her evaluated today. Good luck and hope she's better soon.
