My cat had pancreatitis. Can it become chronic or have lasting effects?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 11 years old | 13 lbs

Pan my 11 yr old cat was greiving due to the loss of our cats Thomsk 2 weeks (heart failure) and Loki (cancer) only a few months before. He had been depressed for a few days, less social and eating less than normal. So we took him to vet and after tests they diagnosed pancreatitis and gave him antibiotics, by this time he was much better, eating and nearer his old self though sometimes still looking for his old friend and his brother. Could there be lasting ill effects because of this illness?

I am so sorry about the recent loss of your two cats. That must be so hard on everyone. Pan is so handsome! Although many can recover from pancreatitis, there are some that can have chronic pancreatitis or they can have periodic flare ups of the disease. It is important to work with your veterinarian to minimize this. Many times your vet will recommend a special diet long term to try and decrease the recurrence of pancreatitis.
