My French bulldog has bladder stones. Is surgery the best option?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | French Bulldog | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 4 months old

Our French bulldog/male, around 16 months old, has had chronic urinary tract infections. He has been on several courses of antibiotics and recently we took him to see another vet and did an ultrasound and found bladder stones. The vet is suggesting we have them removed surgically and then switch his diet to further prevent stone formations. Is surgery the correct next step?

Hi there! Yes, I agree with your veterinarian that surgery is the correct next step as Gus is clearly clinically affected by the stones. It is very important to then switch to the diet to try to prevent stone formation. In his case, the stones are likely acting as a nidus of infection which is why he continues to have infections. Good luck!
