My dog's diarrhea stopped, but she hasn't pooped. Is it normal?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 5 months and 2 days old | 30 lbs

I have a 5mo old pit- lab. She had diarrhea for 2 days, so I fasted her for 12hrs & started her on boiled chicken & white rice. The diarrhea has stopped, but she hasn't pooped in the last 24hrs. To keep her hydrated I put a bit of chicken broth in her water to make sure she's drinking. When she pees, the urine is completely clear, & she had been peeing frequently

It's not uncommon for a dog not to poop for a day or two after they have had diarrhea. I wouldn't get too worried about Daphne just yet, and it's good that the diarrhea has stopped, she's well hydrated, and is eating. Just keep an eye on her, and if she doesn't poop in another 24-48 hours, then I would be worried and have her seen by vet. Hopefully, however, she will come right in another day :-)

It is it uncommon for the stool to decrease after diarrhea when thinhs are returning to normal. If she is eating and drinking normally, acting the same, and not vomiting, I would continue to monitor her for further bowel movements and any straining. If the diarrhea returns or she begins to strain then I would have her seen by your vet

It is common for them to have a pause between the diarrhea and having their normal bowel movements again. As long as she's not showing signs of constipation (straining to defecate, bloated belly, painful, etc.), then it's nothing to be concerned about. She will likely have a bowel movement in the next day or two. If she went a week without defecating, or had other signs of GI problems (vomiting and not eating), then I would be more concerned and recommend she go to the vet for an evaluation. Otherwise, she should be fine and back to normal soon. I hope that helps and all is well with Bella.

It's quite normal for them to not poop for a day or two when the diarrhea gets better. This alone would not be a concern. If she was not pooping and also not eating/drinking and acting depressed/painful, then I would be more concerned and recommend an urgent visit to the vet. If she is otherwise acting normal, then I would not be concerned and recommend waiting a day or two if all else is normal. I am very sorry to hear that Lelani has been so unwell. It sounds as though she is on a great treatment Plan. It can be normal for some constipation to follow a gastrointestinal upset. I would continue to monitor her at home for a few hours. If by the end of the day she still hasn't had a bowel movement, or if she seems in pain or lethargic I Would take her back into the veterinarian. The concern is for a foegein body obstruction. But because she seems happy and active it is less likely.

Sometimes a dog will not "go" for 24 - 48 hours after anti-diarrheal medications have been started. Think of it like this: the system was essentially empty due to the [diarrhea](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/diarrhea-1/), and if the medication is effective, it will slow down the transit time of food through the GI tract and it will take a couple of days for him to actually need to poop again. As long as he is eating and drinking and feeling good, I would not immediately panic. I do often see dogs recovering from diarrhea go as much as 48 - 72 hours before having a bowel movement. If it's longer than this, or if he's not feeling well, get him rechecked immediately.

It is actually normal for them to have this pause in the regular bowel movement cycle after a bad case of diarrhea. With bad diarrhea they tend to empty their bowels and when it abruptly gets better it can take a couple of days before the gut is functioning regularly again. From what you described, it looks like the treatment is working well and he is likely on the mend. I hope that helps and all is well with Blitz.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! I would agree with your veterinarian. He is likely going to go to the bathroom soon. Oftentimes when a dog is recovering from having diarrhea, they stop defecating for a a day or two. That is not a big concern. I am so glad to hear that Leo is getting better! Keep up the good work!

My 3.5 month old puppy isn't pooping since One day. She is peeing but not pooping. Till yesterday she was having diarrhea. We got her checked by vet, and got her antibiotics and electrolytes. Please help.
Not pooping for one day is not really a problem. They can go quite a few days without pooping and it is not necessarily a problem. The antibiotics can slow down the intestines which is probably why she is not pooping. Do not worry about it unless she seems to be trying to poop but nothing is coming out.

Poor Mayla! It sounds like she has taken a touch of tummy upset called gastroenteritis. It is usually not serious and improves itself. Because her tummy has been upset it is common for her to have irregular bowel movements for a day or so. As long as she is bright and drinking I would not be overly concerned. Only feed her chicken and rice until she is back to normal. If she hasnt gone to the toilet tomorrow or the diarrohea is continuing make her a vet appointment.

Just got a rescue 4 days ago and she won’t potty, only once a day or not at all. She’s eating a bland diet because of her diarrhea the past couple days. What should I do?
If she had diarrhea and now she is only pooping once a day or every other day that seems pretty expected to me. Most dogs poop poop 1-2 times a day but if their gut was pretty empty from the diarrhea it may take several days to get back to normal pooping schedule. If she is not eating well or if she is vomiting then I would be concerned, otherwise I would see how she does over the next several days. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
