My puppy has loose stool. Should I try rice before changing food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 22 days old | 21.8 lbs

Deuce has been having loose stool lately. We haven't switched his food or anything. I've been hear things like feeding him boiled white rice to harden his stool. We've taken him to the vet and she suggested we switch his food but I think I wanna try the rice thing since he's been eating this dry food for a few weeks and he's been fine until now. Any suggestions?

It sounds like your puppy has a severe case of colitis, or an inflammation of the colon. Colitis can be caused by many different things. Some of the more common causes include intestinal parasites (very common in young puppies), dietary indiscretion, food intolerance, irritable bowel disease and viruses. You could try adding a small amount of rice to his food to see if that helps. It certainly would not harm him in any way. I would also recommend you have a fecal examination performed to rule out intestinal parasites. If the diarrhea continues for more than 3-5 days, becomes mucous or bloody, or he starts vomiting, you should take Deuce back to the vet to be rechecked. He may need antibiotics and/or probiotics to help the diarrhea clear up. I hope this helps. Best of luck.
