Best affordable puppy food options besides Hill's Science Diet?

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 25 days old | 25 lbs

I have had my puppy on the Science Diet puppy food, we need to find something that is a little more affordable, I have done research but I dont know what to look for. Are there any good puppy foods that I could look at? Or what I should look for in my puppies food? Thank you!

Great question! You want a high quality food, and typically you won't find those at a supermarket. Those are lower quality foods made from poorer ingredients, which is why they are cheaper. Iams and Purina ProPlan are both high quality foods that are cheaper than Hill's Science diet. I recommend feeding Reno a puppy formulated food from one of those two brands. I hope this helps :-)

Beau is a real cutie! Yes, I agree you should switch food. There are better brands with higher quality ingredients. Science Diet, Purina ProPlan and Eukanuba are all great diets. My favorite brand (and what I feed my own dogs) is Royal Canin. For Beau, I would recommend this food: https://www.royalcanin.com/us/dogs/products/retail-products/pug-puppy-dry-dog-food Beau does not need canned food but you can give it as a treat or mix it in with his kibble every day. Pick a high quality, canned puppy food. Canned food does tend to have more calories than dry food so watch his weight closely. hello my dog is one yr old chi/jack russel mix and was recently put on mendroxle she is done her meds ten days n while one meds she was put on a low fat diet prescription hills. she has lost alot of weight. now she needs too be weaned to another dog
Iams is a great brand of food, and it's not as expensive as Hill's. I also like Purina ProPlan, and Purina One. All of these are healthy, and cheaper than Hill's. I recommend trying Layla on one of those foods. You will have to transition her slowly to prevent GI upset. Mix together the new and old food, and over the course of two weeks, gradually increase the amount of new food and decrease the amount of old food until she is eating the new food only. Great question! The difference is the ingredients. The pro food will have higher quality ingredients, more specially the protein source and the cuts used in the food. That is why it is more expensive. If you can't afford the pro food, you can try Iams. It's still a high quality food but it is not as expensive as Pro Plan, Eukanuba, and Hills :-)

What brand of natural dog food is high in protein but not high in price? Also should you feed your dog grain-free food? My dog is currently on Wellness Core but it is a little pricey. Can you recommend anything similar but not as expensive
I would recommend Purina Pro Plan, Hills Science Diet, or Eukanuba diets. The reason is that they all do good testing of products and have veterinarians on staff making sure the food is nutritionally balanced. There are many "boutique" food available these days that look great, but aren't ideally formulated or researched. If Sullivan is an usually active dog (hunts, does competitive agility/fly ball etc, or is a police dog), there are variations of these food for more active dogs. I do not recommend a grain free diet. This is really just a fad born out of increased awareness of gluten-free diets and celiac in people. 99.999% of the time, when dogs have food allergies it is related to an animal protein. The grain free diets are actually more likely to give dogs intestinal issues because they tend to be higher in fat. I hope you find a diet that Sullivan likes and that fits your budget!

Melanie: Is Purina dog chow lower quality than royal canin or science diet for example? Please explain.
Purina ProPlan is just as good as Royal Canin and Science Diet, and the Purina you find in the grocery store is lower quality, but it's still the best of the supermarket brands. The reason it is lower quality is because it doesn't use the high quality ingredients, hence the lower price. I hope this helps!

New pure bred lab puppy on the way, will be 8 weeks old when I bring him home. I am overwhelmed by the food choices. I am on a budget but will buy whatever food I need to that is healthy for my dog. Best puppy food for labs that won’t break the bank?
When cost is a concern I go with Purina Pro-Plan or Purina One. Really good foods actually. I suggest this one for a growing lab. He should be on a large breed puppy food until he is about 10 months old then you can go to adult food. Shop around as you may find a lower price for it somewhere else. ( https://www.walmart.com/ip/Purina-ONE-SmartBlend-Natural-Large-Breed-Formula-Dry-Puppy-Food-16-5-lb-Bag/21553442 ) Don't buy into all this grain-free, all natural, blue buffalo junk. It is not worth the money and these diets have now been shown in clinical studies to cause heart disease. As you've experienced, diet changes can certainly cause some changes in stool volume, and for some dogs, can cause a bit of vomiting and diarrhea. When it comes to the countless brands of dog food on the market today, it's overwhelming to pick one for your pup. I recommend brands that have been formulated by a board-certified veterinary nutritionist, are manufactured in their own facility (less cross-contamination that facilities that manufacture numerous formulations), conduct AAFCO feeding trials, and meet WSAVA guidelines. When it comes down to it, the brands that meet those criteria include Hill's Science Diet, Purina, Royal Canin, Eukanuba, and Iams. As a result, I would recommend switching Lilly over to the Science Diet puppy food. Just remember that anytime you switch foods, be sure to do so by gradually mixing the old and new foods together over a 5-7 day period. I hope that everything goes well!

How much quality and how many times should I provide her meal?
You should buy as good a good as you can afford, royal canin and science plan are very good, but there are cheaper options, just look for a balanced complete food. In terms of quantity weigh your dog and go by the amount written on the food bag. You can weigh out the ration and measure it into a cup. I recommend feeding twice daily.

What is the best choice between Purina Pro Plan, Royal Canin, Hills Science Diet puppy small bites/breed? Mila is underweight and I would like the BEST choice that our vet recommends.
Hello, any of these diets could be recommended by your veterinarian. If you feed the recommended doses as detailed on the bags then this should be sufficient for a puppy, however, in an older dog this may be too rich for her. If your veterinarian is recommending that she continues to eat a puppy food, then my choice would be a Royal Canin diet. Otherwise, you can feed a supplemented or bigger portion adult diet.
