My dog has diarrhea but eats and drinks. Is it an obstruction?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 33 lbs

My pup had diarrhea yesterday, not severe but loose. And had her last bowel movement around 7 this morning. She is eating regularly and drinking regularly. She escaped from her cage yesterday while I was at work. Is it likely there is something obstructing her bowels ?

Dogs with bowel obstructions tend to not want to eat and usually are vomiting. They are also very painful - they will lye in one spot and look sad. Your description of her does not make me concerned of an obstruction. It's also good that you are not noticing the diarrhea as much. Diarrhea is often a temporary condition from an irritated bowel or infection. Keep an eye on her and bring her to the vet if any of the following happens: 1) There is blood in diarrhea 2) Very watery diarrhea 3) Dog starts acting very depressed 4) Dog stops eating or drinking for longer than 24 hours. 5) Diarrhea lasts longer than three days. I hope that helps and Marley is on the mend.

It sounds less likely that Marley has a bowel obstruction if she is passing stool, eating, and not vomiting. Signs of an obstruction or intestinal blockage are vomiting and unable to keep food or water down, abdominal pain, no bowel movements, etc. if she continues to have diarrhea, try feeding a bland diet such as boiled chicken and rice and/ or cottage cheese to help ease her stomach.
