How to stop my dog's aggressive barking at people and vehicles?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 4 years and 5 months old | 56 lbs

I have my well-trained German Shepherd female dog for the last 4 weeks. She's 4 year old. Four people in the family walk her several times a day. The problem is that she keeps barking aggressively to people and bicycle passing by, sometimes even vehicles. She doesn't listen when we tell her to stop. How can we fix this situation?

You can try counter-conditioning with treats. When you see a person, bike or car approaching, but before Nya reacts (this is very important), have her sit by your side. Keep her attention on you by holding a treat between you and her. Give her the treat, praise her and immediately show her another one. Keep her focused on the food until the temptation passes. The theory is that she cannot do two things at once. She will have to forego the barking if she wants the treats. Just be sure not to give her anything if she is barking. Most dogs will choose the treats. You may have to turn the two of you slightly away from her direct line of sight to the "offender," but not so far away that she cannot see it. If you continue to have problems, you can click on the prompt to initiate a consult.
