Why is my cat vomiting hairballs, not eating, and groaning from pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 5 years and 7 months old

Hello, My cat Oreo has threw up 3 times today and had two big hair balls in it. He doesn't want to eat he was crying a lot earlier before he threw up the hair balls now he seems very uncomfortable and groans loudly as if he is in pain when ever he lays down or moves position. I touched his body but he did not show signs of pain as I touched him but if he moves he groans loudly once.

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Oreo. Sounds like you should have him evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. Vomiting and nausea are caused by many things and now it sounds like he may be really uncomfortable or having some abdominal pain. Causes include worms/parasites, pancreatitis, gall bladder/liver problems, dietary indiscretion (eating things he should not eat), dietary intolerance/sensitivity, hairballs, infection, inflammation, among many others. Again let your vet see him soon and they can evaluate him and then advise treatment/tests to perform. Possible tests include fecal exam, blood tests, xrays, and ultrasound exam. Hopefully they can determine what the cause is and then advise a treatment plan. I hope Oreo gets well really soon.
