Is it normal for my dog to be lethargic and not eat during heat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 12 lbs

My dog is in her 1st heat and usually she's a very hyper puppy, but now she is very lethargic and doesn't want to play much. She also is eating way less than normal. Is this typical behavior? She is a 9 month old, 12 lbs, and a daushound mix

Yes, this is typical of a dog in her first heat. If it goes on longer than 5-7 days, then I would take her to the vet for an exam to make sure there is nothing else going on. You can make her food more enticing by adding a little broth or small amount of boiled chicken breast. She should go back to normal as soon as the heat cycle is over.
