How to calm my cat's travel and pet-sitting anxiety and aggression?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 3 years and 3 months old

Tomás & I live in nyc but I actually got him in my hometown Miami. I've traveled with him & recently, he has developed actions where he moans, growls & then hisses at people whenever I take him to be cared for/pet-sat when I am out of town. This happened twice in the last 2 yrs. I'm rly concerned because yesterday I went with him to Brooklyn to stay with friends & he started hissing/attacking at me as I tried to get around the house. Eyes appeared green/blue. I dk what to do to calm him down.

Poor Tomas! It sounds like he gets very anxious and stressed about being taken to new places, which is a fairly common problem in cats - this can certainly cause aggressive behavior similar to what you describe. He would probably be happier staying at home when you are out of town, so you may want to consider having someone stop by your house to feed him daily during your trips rather than taking him to someone else's home to stay. It's possible that prescription anti-anxiety medication may also help with his behavior, so I would definitely suggest talking to your veterinarian about this when you get a chance. Feliway pheromone diffusers or a natural calming supplement like Zylkene or Composure may also be helpful for him.
