Why are my dog's eyes red, watery, and he's lethargic? Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 5 years and 2 months old | 17 lbs

My maltipoo is 5 years old. For the past 3 days, his eyes have been red and very watery. He avoids opening his eyes and has been very lethargic. This morning, his eyes were a little red but after I took him out, they became very red. Also, the outer rim of his iris is a little cloudy, but it could just be due to the redness in his eyes. He stayed out of town for 2 days. Is this serious, or could it just be from stress or allergies?

It would be more helpful if you could repost your question with a photo. It is hard to say by your description what is going on. All I can tell you is that eyes are a very delicate organ and they can go bad quickly if not treated promptly and with the appropriate medications. My best guess is that it is conjunctivitis or an allergy. I don't recommend that you put anything in the eyes (other than plain saline solution) until he has had an eye exam with your vet. You could do more harm than good. I hope this helps. If you want to post again with photos that would be fine. Best wishes!
