My cats have a dry cough. Is secondhand smoke causing lung problems?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 4 years and 2 months old | 12 lbs

I have 4 cats, myself and my husband smoke around them everyday, all 4 of them have a dry hacking deep cough that comes and goes, it's not everyday they cough, they eat good, no sneezing, no watery eyes just that cough. Could this be lung cancer? Lung disease? Or something else? Please give me some kind of idea what's going on with them.

Hi there. There are many issues that can cause cat to cough. They include asthma, bronchitis, heart disease, pneumonia, and lung cancer. I recommend taking your cats to the veterinarian. Your veterinarian will probably want to do x-rays to determine the cause of their coughing. Good luck!
