Is it safe to stop my diabetic dog's insulin based on online advice?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | spayed | 10 lbs

On got on a website called petmd and it says that we should stop giving maltida insulin shots because this can cause more problems since she eats sometimes and she does not eat. Cause she is a diabetic is that true?

You should never make any changes to Matilda's treatment plan for her diabetes without consulting with the veterinarian who is treating her - so if she is currently on daily insulin injections, I would definitely not discontinue this unless your veterinarian recommends it. In general, I can tell you that some diabetic cats need insulin to control their diabetes, while others can be managed with dietary changes alone. This is something to discuss with your veterinarian, as the decision must be made on a case-by-case basis and will depend greatly on her lab results and current glucose levels as well as an assessment of how she is doing at home.

Apologies, I just re-read Matilda's ID details and realized that she is a dog - in that case, if she is diabetic, she will definitely need insulin injections since dogs get Type 1 diabetes and are insulin-dependent regardless of diet. So if you have concerns or she isn't eating well, I would suggest talking with your veterinarian about this - but you should not make any changes to her insulin dosage or stop giving it without their instructions.
