I am so very sorry to hear that Bruno is experiencing these changes to his voice. I am sure it is unsettling for you both. Unfortunately there are a range of causes for such a change including infections of the respiratory tract or lungs, kennel cough, foreign bodies trapped within the respiratory tract, pathologies of the trachea, diseases of the nerves supplying the area, as well as some cancers. Since you only began to notice the change a day ago, I would continue to monitor at home for another 24 hours. If the change does not correct itself, I would schedule an appointment with your veterinarian. They will perform a physical exam and run diagnostic tests to determine the cause of the voice change. These tests could include chest X-rays, blood work and possibly endoscopy. Unless Bruno is having trouble breathing, coughs up any foam, or seems very down and depressed, then you need to take him in immediately to see a veterinarian. Difficult breathing is indicated when the respiratory rate or effort are increased, the body wall moves with greater force with each breath, the dog seems distressed or depressed. In the meantime, Keep Bruno calm and quiet. With as much rest as possible. do not take him for a walk, and if he needs to go outside to relieve himself use a chest harness not a neck collar. Do not administer any medications, including over the counter medications like Tylenol, or ibuprofen, syrups or natural remedies, without direct consent form a veterinarian. The dosages for dogs and humans, as well as their tolerance for such drugs, varies greatly, and Bruno could become quite ill if given any medications without a vet's authorisation. I hope this was a helpful answer and more importantly that Bruno feels better soon. Warmest regards and best of luck to you both.
