Why is my cat picking up and moving her newborn kittens? Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female

I have 5 kittens and they are 8 days old. I put her in a room closed of, so the cat doesn't run of and not feed them. The thing is when i let her out for a while because she seemed somewhat bored and depressed, she became happy. Then let her in again, she started to become hyper and picked up one of the kittens and wants to put him in a place but then stops and goes back and then puts him down then goes back, then repeat. I had to stop her so the kitten doesn't get injured from her doing that.

Hello, what you're seeing is normal nursing behavior in a cat. They will pick their kittens up by the scruff and move them to where mom feels it is safe for them. You may not need to intervene as much and just monitor that kittens are nursing every 2 hours and ensure mom has plenty of food and water. Hope this helps.
