My cat has a new liquid-filled bump on her ear. When to see vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Female | spayed | 8 years and 6 months old | 12 lbs

Cat has one bump on the base of her ear. It's not soft but not rock solid, feels liquid or gell filled. It doesn't itch or hurt her. It looks skin coloured but she has such long fur it's hard to see. It wasn't there yesterday. When should I take her to the vet vs keep an eye on it?

Hi there. I'd probably take Har in to the vet now. It sounds a lot like a hematoma (a blood filled ear) usually cause by ear mites or an ear infection. These will need to be lanced under sedation by your veterinarian, drained, and bandaged. She will need antibiotics and pain medications in her healing process as well-both oral and aural (for the ear, dependent on the cause of the hematoma). I hope this helps!
