My senior cat drinks a lot, loses weight, has bloody urine. Is her food okay?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 15 years old | 10 lbs

My cat is 15, started drinking water heavily about 6 months ago, and slowly losing weight- 1.3 lbs in same time. Now had two episodes in 10 days of bloody urine from straining. But then clears up after the crystals or ? have passed. Her blood and urine tests were clean, but diluted, and last one had high white count in urine. Started Pretty Litter to watch for color changes, saw colors but now clear yellow. Switched to Hills Sci Diet Age Defy Indoor food ~2 months ago-will it help or hurt?

It likely will not hurt her. A canned diet should be fed to increase water intake. Her kidney function should be monitored via blood work. Consider also an abdominal ultrasound to assess kidney size and architecture. Older cats are prone to developing kidney disease and symptoms may not become apparent until a large percentage of kidney function is compromised. For this reason, it is best to diagnose the condition early to provide care that will slow the progression.
