My dog is straining with a red bulge and yellow watery poop. Urgent?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Female | spayed | 4 years and 1 month old | 66 lbs

My dog has had two normal bowel movements this morning that came easily. She is now straining and has a small red bulge protruding from her anus. It does disappear after a small amount of time passes....when she stretches or tries to poop, which has turned watery and yellow, it re appears. Do I need to seek immediate emergency medical care for Sammie, or can I wait until Monday and take her to our usual veterinary care provider? Please note, Sammie a is 4yr old spayed boxer

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am sorry to hear about Sammie. The red bulge could be inflammed rectal tissue from straining or potentially a polyp or a mass. It sounds like she has some diarrhea. I would not feed her but give her water for 12-24 hours. Then start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 3 1/2 cups per day until 1-2 normal stools. I would recommend getting her seen Monday if she otherwise does ok this weekend. They should perform a rectal exam to see if they feel anything abnormal. Good luck!
