Why is my rabbit's cherry eye dry, cloudy, and getting worse?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Female | unspayed | 10 lbs

It is actually a rabbit. She is about 2 years old. She started having a lot of eye boogers and next thing I know she had a cherry eye. When I saw her eye, it was very dry like if it wasn't functioning. The next day, the cherry looked a little bigger and her pupil was cloudy. I don't know what is going on with her and would like your opinion.

It would be much easier to give an opinion if there were some photos attached to your question. Without actually seeing the eye makes it hard to say much. If it is a cherry eye it needs to be repaired surgically. The cloudiness you are describing means that there is either trauma to the cornea from the cherry eye rubbing on it or there is edema (swelling) behind the cornea from pain and inflammation. If the tear gland (cherry eye) is popped out that will cause a dry eye so it fits with what you are describing. A cloudy eye is not a good sign. If you want to help her you will need to take her to your vet for an exam. That way she can get the proper diagnosis and treatment. I hope this helps. Best wishes!
