Dog has pimple-like spots. How to treat his skin until we see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 2 years and 4 months old | 70 lbs

Hello, I believe my dog as some for of pyoderma. He has gotten small pimple type spots under his chin. We found he was allergic to one brand of his toys, we believe it was the latex. This was about 7mo ago and no problem since. He was treated with antibiotics. Recently after a new toy they came back but no infection. While on a road trip he has developed the same type pimples but very large and on his neck. How can I treat this at home until we get back to his vet. He is acting like normal

It looks like your dog has a skin infection, most likely caused by allergies or fleas. The allergies can be from a protein in his food or to something in the environment, like grasses, pollens, dust, etc. I would recommend taking Coop in to see the vet so he can be started on some antibiotics to help clear up his skin and get on a good flea control. I would also recommend discussing with your vet some options for medication to help control his allergies like Atopica, Apoquel, or Cytopoint. In the meantime, until you can make it to the vet, you can try cleaning the area with dilute hydrogen peroxide and applying some antibiotic ointment to the affected area.
