Why is my cat urinating infrequently but seems perfectly fine?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 8 years and 1 month old | 13 lbs

8 year old male cat shows no signs of pain, illness, or urinary blockage but has begun urinating very INfrequently (last vet didn't read and answered the wrong problem). He is drinking freely, eating, not licking the area, no straining or in box frequently, no bladder fullness, no obvious stone on palpitation. I cannot for the life of me figure out why he is urinating infrequently but appears in no distress and shows no other symptoms. What should we do?

Is your cat going outside at all? If so, he may be urinating outside and not using the litter box as much. If he does not go outside is it possible that he is urinating in the house somewhere? Since he is showing no signs of pain of a blockage or an overly full bladder (like visiting the litter box frequently and only going small amounts, or having a hard painful abdomen) I would not be too concerned. If you notice any of these symptoms, or you feel like he may be dehydrated, then I would recommend taking him into your vet to be checked out. They can assess his hydration level, palpate his bladder, and check his urine for infection.
