My dog has cloudy eyes. Is it cataracts, or just from old age?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Toy Poodle | Male | neutered | 10 lbs

Reading online says very different things for every symptom. I was just reading about how a sign of cataracts is cloudy eyes . My dog has cloudy eyes but i thought it was because of his age. Should I be worried ?

It's true that older dogs develop normal aging changes in their eye that can cause a slightly cloudy or hazy appearance to the pupil - this is called lenticular sclerosis, and does not cause any vision problems or other issues. However, cataracts are common in older dogs and can also cause cloudiness in the eye. It can be very difficult to tell the difference between these two conditions without an opthalmoscope, so I would recommend having Rudy's eyes checked by your veterinarian when you get a chance - he/she can do a complete ophthalmic exam to determine if anything is abnormal.
