My puppy's cough returned after antibiotics. Is it kennel cough?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 3 months and 24 days old | 10 lbs

Ziggy was coughing a few weeks ago. The vet gave him hydrocodone and an antibiotic. He stopped coughing but was extremely lethargic and droopy. Now he is back to fighting form, but he has started coughing again. Any ideas what could be causing this? Couldn't be kennel cough for so long (this would be week 4)? I'm a bit mystified. Otherwise he is playing like crazy and eating okay.

Kennel cough is still a possibility. Some patients have more than one infection or develope resistant infections. Discuss continued antibiotic therapy or further diagnostics such as sampling of the airways for culture.
