Puppy throwing up: When to offer water and what bland food to give?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 9 months and 9 days old | 50 lbs

Dog is vomitting, close to 4-5 times today. July 4th she didn't have diarrhea. It's been slowing down in fequency. Small fever. I took her swimming yesterday in a rocky quarry. I believe she got a virus. She's been sleeping a lot today especially for a puppy. When do I start water what type of diet should she go back on too?

Etta is a very pretty girl! It's good that she seems to be feeling better now, and that the vomiting appears to be resolving. I would recommend waiting at least 8 hours since her most recent vomiting episode before offering any food. You can offer small amounts of water every hour or so in the meantime, or give her ice cubes to lick on if she wants to. Once she's gone at least 8 hours with no vomiting, you can try feeding a small amount of something very bland and easy to digest, such as plain boiled chicken and rice. If she keeps this down, continue with this diet for the next 2-3 days until you are sure everything is back to normal. If she continues to vomit for more than 24 hours total, or if she develops any other symptoms such as acting lethargic or not wanting to eat, I would recommend having her seen by a vet as these can be signs of something more serious.

Very commonly in young dogs these episodes are related to dietary indiscretion. As a first approach, I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, more vomiting, lethargy or inappetence.
