My dog's cherry eye is bleeding. Is it an emergency or can it wait?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | neutered | 9 years and 2 months old | 22 lbs

My 9 year old male dachshund has had a cherry on his eye for about on year now. About 30 minutes ago I noticed that same eye was leaking a bloody discharge and the cherry looks damaged. His actual eye seems unaffected and he does not seem to be in pain. Is this an emergency or can it wait a couple days to get into the regular vet?

Hello. I am sorry that Jack is having this issue. Cherry eye is the gland of the protruding, so if this became scratched or damaged, it could bleed. If Jack is not squinting, is eating/drinking normally, and appears visual in the eye and if you rinse the eye with just warm (not hot) water and the bleeding stops, you can monitor it for now. That being said, any issue with an eye can become much worse quickly, so if you have any indication that it is getting worse, continuing to bleed, any pain (change in behaviour, squinting, etc.) is noted or Jack seems not visual, I would get him seen right away. Do not put any medications in the eye without it being seen as some can cause serious damage. Good luck with Jack!
