My cat is losing weight and only eats when I watch. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 1 year and 3 months old

My Tom cat has recently lost quite a bit of weight and we just noticed that he will only eat if we stand watching him and if we leave he stops eating and constantly meows until he is brought back and we watch him until he finishes. He stopped eating properly around March and we have been watching him eat since the start of June is this normal? Or is there something wrong with him?

Hello, I'm glad you're keeping an eye on Leo's eating and weight. It is never normal for a cat to eat notably less to the point of weight loss. I will often see outdoor cats who eat less cat food in the summer months because they are hunting to supplement their diet - but in those cases, the cats are keeping a steady weight. If Leo is losing weight and eating less, he should be seen by a vet. Your vet will likely want to check a fecal sample to look for intestinal parasites, and may recommend bloodwork and/or x-rays for more information. Hope this helps!

Leo could have an issue with his teeth such as feline oral resort of lesions or gingivostomatitis, or other causes of these changes include G.I. disease such as IBD or even a food aversion. I recommend Leo have a good oral exam done by your veterinarian to make sure there's no dental problems causing his issues.
